Better known by his stage names Alex G or, formerly, (Sandy) Alex G, Alexander Giannascoli is a musician, producer, and singer-songwriter. He began producing music at age 11 when his parents bought an Apple computer and he started learning to play his brother’s guitar and record music. When he was in high school, Giannascoli made two albums and was involved in the goth-pop project MOTHER with his sister and the punk band The Skin Cells. He later enrolled at Temple University, studying English, but he left in order to pursue music full time.
Between 2010 and 2012, Giannascoli recorded and released several albums, EPs, and singles on Bandcamp. The recordings were well-received and he soon gained a large fanbase, as well as acclaim from fellow musicians. As word spread of his talent, The Fader called Giannascoli "the internet's secret best songwriter," which led to Orchid Tapes signing him to their roster. He released his debut album on the label, DSU, in 2014. The album appeared in several publications’ ‘Best Albums of 2014’ lists, including Consequence of Sound, Vogue, and The Washington Post. Following the album’s release, Giannascoli toured throughout North America and Europe.
In 2015, he signed with Domino Recording Company. He released Beach Music, his sixth studio album, that October and hit number nine on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums chart, as well as drawing positive reviews from critics. In 2016, Giannascoli worked with Frank Ocean on his albums Endless and Blonde, providing guitars and arrangements for several songs.
Giannascoli’s second album on Domino, Rocket, was released on May 19, 2017, alongside its first two singles, "Bobby" and "Witch". "Brick" and "Sportstar" followed.
House of Sugar, his third album on Domino, was released on September 13, 2019. The album debuted at number five on the Heatseekers Albums chart. As with his previous albums on Domino, House of Sugar was critically acclaimed, appearing on several end-of-year lists.
In April 2022, Giannascoli scored the film We're All Going to the World's Fair
